A Southwest Florida Snowbird Christmas

If you’ve lived in Southwest Florida for any length of time you’ll be quite aware of the annual migration south from the Northern states in the winter months of retiree snowbirds. Singer Karen Scott has come up with an amusing parody, celebrating a Southwest Florida Christmas. Nice one Karen!

North Fort Myers based, Karens Christmas album, ‘The Gift’ is available on CD and as (for a limited time) pay what you can here.

Kayak Fishing Tales: Matlacha

YouTube is proving to be a resource for even the most obscure of places in Florida, including this well shot video from Heliconia. Seems I’m not the only one that loves Matlacha.

Florida Favourite Places, Matlacha

Living in the northern part of Cape Coral puts me in quite a prime position in many ways. Just over two hours from Miami and Tampa (in opposite directions) and just over three to Orlando (and Disney).

But if a much shorter drive and some major chillout time is required then its off to Matlacha (pronounced “MAT-la-shay”) for me , just down the road (ten miles/twenty minutes).

The community’s name comes from a Calusa word meaning “water to the chin.” It is an “Old Florida” fishing village home to many brightly-colored art galleries, island boutiques, seafood restaurants, and traditional Florida cottages. And, more importantly (to many) tons of fishing!

Fort Myers Beach

I was lucky enough to live on Fort Myers Beach for a while and this was my view, just five minutes from my front door .

Fort Myers Beach Homes

The nice thing about Fort Myers Beach is its laid-back compact nature. You can explore the island on foot, hire a bike, a Harley, or jump on the trolley bus.
